In our numerous visits to Italy, amidst the enchanting landscapes of Montepulciano, Val di Chiana, and Val D’orcia, we were captivated by the unique terroir that allows Sangiovese (Prugnelo Gentille) to express its lively and complex character. It was here, in Montepulciano, that we found the opportunity to reconnect with my family’s heritage. Our dream became a reality with the acquisition of a historic winery, where we now produce ‘our wine.’
Originating from Abruzzo, my grandfather, Raffaele Toppetta, emigrated to Canada like many others after the Second World War. He left behind my father and the rest of his young family while he settled down and found a place for them to stay. Ten years later, my father, along with his two brothers and my Nonna (Filomena), made the journey aboard the ocean liner S.S. Independence.
Seventy years have passed since that first voyage across the Atlantic. Today, we embark on a similar journey with our three boys, eager to immerse ourselves in our shared passions for wine, nature, history, and Italian culture.
